"Does anyone ever realize life while they live it...every, every minute?"
"No. Saints and poets maybe... they do some."
Hey friends,
You may recognize that beautiful quote from “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder, one of my favorite plays. I played Emily at sleep-away camp in high school and want to play her again someday. So excited it’s coming to Bway in the fall.
Anyway, thanks so much for coming out to my Pete’s show this weekend. SMALL venue, LARGE instruments… but we made the most of it and I loved the intimate nature of the night. Especially loved sharing so many new songs with you. Here’s a little clip from the first live performance of “Old Times’ Sake”:
I recently reconnected with an old friend, Amanda. We knew each other from our favorite Friday night acting class growing up (yes, the one I sing about in “Screen Door Memories”). And two nights ago, we — along with her boyfriend Lennon — had a beautiful (vegan) dinner and found ourselves totally rejuvenated by what turned into 7 hours of deep discussion into the wee hours of the morning... as artists do.
Amanda also grew up acting professionally in NYC, went to art school, and is now training to be a marriage and family therapist, while painting/singing on the side. Lennon grew up a creative kid, became a graphic designer, now works a 9 to 5 as a software engineer, tinkering with sampling vinyl records / music production in his spare time. And me — I grew up doing the “professional kid actor/musician” thing, went to school for acting, fell into teaching the arts for many years, and found my way back to pursuing my music & acting full-time.
Mid-conversation, as Amanda, Lennon, and I spoke about the pros and cons of making your passion your job versus side hobby… I had a sudden realization that it’s been exactly one year since my very last teaching recital. One WHOLE year since this… was my life:
A year already? Wtf have I even achieved? Worrying, reaching out to people, waiting for responses, brainstorming, netflix binging, and financial struggling… that’s all that came to mind initially. It was hard to zero in on the good parts.
So I took some time to reflect and wanted to share with you some highlights from this last year of doing the ARTIST THING. Good to think about the WINS sometimes and give yourself flowers, or so I hear!!!
Which brings us to now - June 2024!
I’m sooo excited to share that I’ve been cast in a 29-hr reading of an amazing new musical by Bonnie Gleicher! “Oy Band” will be directed by Sammi Cannold, with musical direction by my amazing friend Cynthia Meng! I’m PUMPED to start working on this in 2 weeks!
Full Circle
After a YEAR of hitting the ground running, I’ve decided to take on a limited number of coaching clients again to support my artist journey & continue this momentum!
This summer, I will be offering private lessons in voice, songwriting, and acting, both in-person at my Upper West Side studio and virtually. Though I most frequently work with kids, I am also open to working with adults who are looking to explore and gain confidence in their voice, songwriting, and/or accompanying themselves on piano/guitar.
Also, any last-minute music/acting audition prep is my JAM!
If you, your child, or a friend are interested and would like more details, please reach out to me at sofiezamchickmusic@gmail.com.
XOXO,
Sof
P.S. Meet Tiger - the cute Fisher Price toy I recorded the voice for in July. Tiger sings and dances; teaches you about parts of the body, colors, and the alphabet; and re-mixes songs using your recorded voice. You can buy him here :) No, I don’t get residuals - I just think Tiger is pretty darn CUTE.
where can I listen to Old Times Sake in full.. I really love the sound, and lyrics….
The Year of Ass-Kicking as only the Queen of Song could.
