Haha just kidding. Single as hell!
But that’s how the chorus of “Down Low Love” begins… a fun bop Jasmine Forsberg and I wrote together in 2020 as part of the Johnny Mercer Songwriter Project. We performed it for the first time to a sold-out house at 54 Below as part of Jasmine’s Music That Made Me concert two weekends ago. It was amazing to share the stage with this PHENOMENAL performer/friend and finally hear her sing “Heart of Stone” live after watching her Six: The Musical Tiny Desk concert a million times.
Giggin’ at Town Hall
So thankful for my friend Cynthia Meng who recommended me for another fun gig this month… singing in a live-score screening celebrating the anime show Cowboy Bebop’s 25th anniversary! Here’s a clip of our 4-person choir backed by The Broadway Sinfionetta all-female orchestra:
Any of you Cowboy Bebop fans? After watching a few scenes and singing Yoko Kanno’s amazing score (and getting to meet her backstage), I’m dying to watch it!
Hangin’ with new singer/musician friends Pearl, Yuko, Alexandra, Jillian, and Sean.
My friends are cool
One of the best parts about having more availability (since leaving teaching) is being able to show up for my friends more often! Just last week, I had the pleasure of seeing 3 of my best friends perform, all of whom are super inspiring, incredible musicians! :)
Alyssa Smith Trio at Daily Press Coffee (w/ Mohan Ritsema & Usman Salahuddin)
I met Alyssa two summers ago at the Honeywell Arts Institute “Resonance” Program in Wabash, IN. She’s an insane jazz pianist and composer who just moved to the city from Michigan. Her talent is out-of-this-world and she’s already making a ~splash~ here within the jazz scene! I’m so happy she’s here!!! Follow her on IG here to catch one of her next gigs.
Shofi at Heaven Can Wait (w/ Hannah Nossan, Christof Augustin, & Alyssa Smith)
I met indie singer/songwriter Michael Shofi 3 summers ago in the Johnny Mercer Songwriter Foundation Project over Zoom! Since then, we’ve become forever friends and groupies, showing up at all of one another’s gigs! We also collabed on a nostalgic song together recently called “Kids Again” (sneak peek here).
Listen to more of Shofi’s music here on Spotify.
Nicole Eve Goldstein at The Green Room 42 (w/ Ann Stein & Cylie Cabrera)
I technically met Nicole a whopping 14 summers ago at our childhood performing arts sleep-away camp, Belvoir Terrace in Lenox, MA. But our friendship truly blossomed 3 summers ago when we both returned to visit / work at camp as adults :) Nicole’s had a stunning voice since we were kids, but she continues to astound me with her deep artistry in both the opera and musical theatre world.
Follow Nicole to stay up to date on her performances here on IG.
Thanks for keepin’ an eye out for my newsletters. I’m wishing you all a happy December full of celebration, reflection, and memory-making!
Love,
Sofie
Love this!
